What to Do After an Emergency Room Visit

October 5, 2023

At some point or another, many people find themselves in an emergency room. While the care you receive may be top-notch, you still might be stressed about why you're there, among other things. For example, bills are the last thing you want to worry about. Here are a few ways you can recover following your emergency room visit.

Check With Your Insurance

Never let insurance issues or billing stop you from receiving the medical care you need. State and federal laws require insurance companies to pay for emergency care regardless of whether it is obtained at an in-network or out-of-network facility. With that in mind, any reputable
emergency room will also advocate for you. Should you allow them, the staff can negotiate and appeal for coverage from your insurance company. That way, nothing halts the treatment you deserve.

Appeal if Necessary

The ER will send the claim to your insurance company and the latter decides how much that claim is valued. According to our team, the insurance company must respond within 15 days and must settle it in 35 days. Once you receive that itemized information, you might feel that your insurance company is undervaluing your claim. If so, you don't have to accept that. That same ER will be able to send an appeal for reimbursement at fair market value. The insurance company has to formally decline to increase the claim amount or to cover the remaining cost. Claims can take a while, usually around a year of negotiating time, but it's to grant you the fairest bill.

Rest as Prescribed

Too often, patients attempt to jump back into normalcy after an accident. However, your body and mind will thank you if you take it slower afterward. Your doctor will give you the medicine and the treatment along with aftercare instructions, but it's up to you to follow through. Take it easy and relax as your body does its incredible work of rebuilding itself. Trust us, you'll recover to normal in due time.

The ER doesn't need to be such a harrowing place to visit. According to Becker's Hospital Review, there are 49 emergency department visits per 100 people each year in Texas. Statistically, we'll all end up there, so make sure you're choosing one with quality, compassionate care. Here at the Family Emergency Room at Georgetown, we're proud to service you with no appointments needed. We're open 24 hours a day, every day of the week. If you need our services, please don't hesitate to stop by.
